Atlassian's recent announcement opens new gates: Jira Service Management extension points are now available for Forge!

With this change, it is now possible to develop Forge apps that customize Jira Service Management, Jira Software and Confluence.

Forge for Jira Service Management

Building apps for enterprise customers comes with a complex set of expectations and requirements, including compliance with privacy and industry regulations. This increased level of overhead has put the enterprise market out of reach for many small partners.

By choosing Forge, developers building Jira Service Management apps have a jump start on meeting enterprise needs. Forge includes out-of-the-box features for enterprises, such as a secure underlying infrastructure and the ability to store data and compute on Atlassian.

In addition, Forge provides developers with a special benefit: the ability to host an app in the Atlassian cloud. Forge does some of the hard work required to build an app that can be installed by thousands of users, including secure infrastructure, serverless features that scale automatically, and an intuitive CLI. It's never been faster, easier, or more secure to build powerful apps for Jira Service Management.

Background on the update

Atlassian's approach is to extend the extension of Forge to the entire Atlassian product suite, so that every product will soon be customizable with Forge. With the realization, of the Jira Service Management extension points for Forge, Atlassian is a big step closer to this goal. With Jira Service Management being by far the highest growth rate compared to other Atlassian products and offering a user base of around 35,000, implementing ITSM with Jira Service Management is an innovation for large digital enterprises.

App developers play a central role in this transformation. With this release, developers who extend and customize Jira Service Management can now build on Forge, our next-generation cloud app development platform.

What has changed?

The compatible Jira Service Management extension points now include all Jira Service Management REST APIs and 8 UI modules, and have been updated to support granular forge areas. In general, REST APIs are designed for developers who want to integrate Jira Service Management with other applications, or for administrators who want to automate their workflows and processes.

UI modules are building blocks that developers can use to create Forge apps. Among other things, the building blocks are used to customize the customer portal and automate workflows between Jira Service Management and Jira Software. You can use the following modules only with Jira Service Management:

queuePage, portalRequestDetail, portalRequestDetailPanel, organizationPanel, portalHeader, portalFooter, portalSubheader, and portalProfile

In general, this update is a big step forward for teams and customers when it comes to collaborating and solving tasks and problems efficiently.
