Data Residency for Atlassian Cloud: Now for Germany!

One of the biggest blockers for many companies to move to the cloud is and remains the issue of security: Where is my data stored? Is it safe from external access? What guarantees does the software provider offer me?
Atlassian has had these concerns of many (potential) customers in mind from an early stage when they brought their well-known tools such as Jira and Confluence into the cloud and continues to work on constantly improving the topic of security in the cloud. So, like many of you, we are pleased to announce the following news:

🎉 The Germany region is now available as a data location for the Atlassian Cloud!

With the option to explicitly choose the location for your data in Germany, you'll have more flexibility and control to develop exactly the data strategy that makes the most sense for your business!

But that's not all: Atlassian has only started with the country-specific location for Germany and plans to expand this to include the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada by the end of next year.

🗓 When can you start using it?

From 7th November, new and existing instances will have access to the "Germany" region when selecting the data location. According to Atlassian, the introduction will take place gradually over the next few weeks. So if you can't see "Germany" in the Data Residency query right now, try again next week. All instances should have access to the selection by 5th December.

🤔 What else?

Data Residency is just one of many security and privacy updates Atlassian is planning for the next year. The next few months will also see

  • HIPAA in Jira Service Management,

  • EAPs for bring-your-own-key encryption,

  • external user security and

  • improvements to audit logs and app access controls

being introduced. To follow the development of these features and learn when you can expect to see them in the cloud, we recommend subscribing to Atlassian's Cloud Roadmap so you don't miss out on anything else cloud-related!
